OK Guys,

It is 53 outside and spring is on its way. The next 3-4 weeks is one of the best times of the year to catch BIG Pickerel here in eastern Mass. So who wants to go fishing???

I'll even lend 'ya one of these....

I took a few minutes tonight to look through this website again and decided I need to spend more time here. I am Cameron on the Fiberglass Flyrodders board...and Heddon Pal is my new global Yuku account name.

Anyways...the last few winters I've excited myself with the idea of really learning the family pond and getting deeper into warmwater fishing...and maybe 2008 is the year that rings true.

I have been looking at the float tube in the basement thinking boy I would like to squeeze in another trip to the local kettle pond before the seasons over. Well I had a window of opportunity today so I topped off the air in the tube and loaded it up. It was a stunningly nice day on the pond for so late in October. Yesterday, I finally caught my first pickeral on a flyrod ; it was little (10 inches), but fell to a bead head crystal nymph (size 10).

I've caught many bigger ones on spinning gear, but never on a flyrod.

Years ago when I started fly fishing with a seven foot Eagle Claw Feather Light fly rod and little Martin reel up in Northern Michigan for bluegills...there were several times when I had hooked up with a small bluegill only to have my rod bend over double under the weight of a trashing pike that had picked off my little 'gill as dinner.

Now living in S.C. the family pond has quite a few resident pickerel (aka jacks or jackfish)...some pretty decent sized...that are excellent at...

Any one try for Muskie's on a fly before??? I have a friend that invited me to go with him to a northern Indiana lake to fish for muskie's. Any info would be great, btw, I would be using a 7wt rod and 8wt line??????!!!!!!!!!!

Found it at a used book store in Long Beach, California during a business trip last week. I've never heard of this fellow or this book. It's got to be one of the only full books devoted to pickerel in the lexicon.

For you purists out there, look away, but earlier this week I was on the Assabet River in Stow. I was chucking flies earlier in the day, but fishing on a bass boat with a buddy of mine, once the wind picked up, and one near miss of my cast and his head, I switched to "egg beaters." I went fishing for pike today but fish were not active. I had several follow my fly but no takers. It was a long and difficult afternoon. I became so frustrated that i cast my fly at the head of one big fellow. when it landed he simply drifted away to deeper water. I changed sizes of flies, color and tippet; nothing happened. oh well

people often laugh when i tell them i fish the Passaic river. but the longer i fish it, the more i am amazed by it. This week i've seen LM bass, bluegills, stripers, carp & pike all living happily in the Passaic river. I've been using a March Brown 6 wt rod with the new franco vivarelli reel. The drag on my reel is impressive; it slows powerful fish and holds 150 yds of backing.

Today i caught my first pike of the year. the fish made several long runs. i was able to stay with him...

Amazing Strike

No pictures and no catch to report, but while out on Grove today I enticed a feisty pickerel on the deer hair frog I was casting. No lie, this fish shot out of the water, grabbing my fly, slicing the leader as soon as the line went tight, but landed a good three feet away from it's point of exit, all in one smooth arc. It was really an amazing thing to see.

Not a bad fish, either. Probably in the 18 inch range.

I was able to retrieve the fly, which I found floating near...
