Catfish on a fly

I caught my first catfish of the year while exploring another lake in NYC. This fish was taken on a #14 BH hare's ear. inspite of his size he fought HARD! He did everything but jump. There are two more lakes on Staten Island that I want to fish, Wolf's pond and Brady's pond.

Got talking with a few angler brothers at church last Sunday and the subject of carp came up. Man, I know I say this every year, but I really want to target those things this year. Gotta hit the Concord River near where folks feed the ducks and see what I can toss around that will imitate a hunk of bread.

It all started about five years ago. We discovered that during the 2002 flood, stripers had washed in from the lake into our trout tailwater. A local guide with his drift boat was tied off in the shade below a bridge, at the top of a hole.

Massachusetts Swift River Trout Fishing

Spent the day last Friday with Western MA Guide Marla Blair. It was a great outing and we learned a lot from Marla. We focused mostly on nymphing as there isn't or wasn't much in the way of hatches on the river. Marla has a book called Positive Fly Fishing from which you can learn most of what we did in person. I've spent about 15 hours fishing for pike and carp this week. surprisingly, I've caught schoolies(striped bass) and BGs also.
today i hooked a schoolie that was nearly 15" long, beautiful fish. The BGs were about the thickness of my hand and 7" long.
I plan to go back tomorrow because i saw a big burly leather carp in the pack today. I want to try some new flatwing flies that i got on e-bay too. forgot my camera

I haven't posted on The Bass Pond for some time and thought that it would be a good time to catch up.

Here are a couple of carp shots of my personal best fly rod carp. (The one in the middle is just a head shot of the same fish showing perspective with my 7 weight mid-arbor reel.) One was caught in late May, the other in early June of this year. Both were caught on a seven weight rod with an 8 and 10 pound tippet, respectively.
