Hi,

I am thinking about buying a canoe to fish in small lakes/ponds and relatively small/calm streams. I was looking at the Old Town Guide 147 and the Mad River
Adventure 14'. Has anyone had experience with those brands or models? Or is there another option I should consider? I would need to stay around or below
that $700 range to keep peace at home!

thanks for your help,

Sorry AJ, I believe the company went belly up. I can't find them on the net and/or any dealers. I believe they were local in their day though. Unfortunatly
for the industry, plastic has become the material of choice for canoes. Plastic has it's uses but suffers in hull designs and weight. This has put allot of
fiberglass canoe builders out fo buisness as glass is just more expensive/ labor intensive to produce. This is the first and only 12' nature bound I've
seen. Snagged it...

No, I wouldn't call myself a dealer. Just a collector with very little self control . I really never met any watercraft that I didn't find some
redeeming qualities in. Canoes. kayaks, prams, jons, float tubes.. I like them all. In recient years,I've found considerable entertainment in buying boats
(and outboards) at a rate of 3-6/year for personal use . A few stay if they scratch an itch. Most move on to make room for the next. I've been good ( and

OG, one thing I've learned is key to a canoe you intend for lakes/ponds is to have one with a keel. I paddle around in a 17ft keelless Riverjammer, and
while I love the canoe because it is light for its size and paddles/navigates easily, it's frustrating in a breeze when I'm alone. A keel keeps it
from spinning on stillwaters, but can get awful torn up in a river/stream.

If you are looking for one canoe to do double duty, keep that in mind as you may find that you...

I just wanted to thank you all for the info. Also, the pics are great---they definitely show some pretty awesome customizations that can be done to these
canoes. One followup question, I will probably use the canoe on some small rivers/streams with a buddy of mine and we would be floating and then wade fishing,
is the 14' canoe (the OT Guide model is 38" wide) big enough if we are not camping etc.?

Paul,
I've had one for about 15 years now and it shows. But its tough and good for another 15. You can get it in where only a tube would go otherwise. Its
light and fast with a kayak double paddle which rests across the gunnels while fishing. I'm way topheavy and have dumped only twice...both times when it
was sitting on an unseen rock while boarding. The big bass "blood sport" photo I posted last fall was taken of it laying in the bottom of this boat.
Think it was...

That is a neat set up, prevents a awkward canoeist from dumping all his prize possessions and losing dignity. Spilled a canoe in front of a bunch a girls in
