I was finally able to get out on the family pond today with a friend that is visiting from Colorado. He has never really done to much warmwater fly fishing and we were both eager to get on the water.

This pickerel is pretty darn nice for the water we are fishing. My wife's family has been known to kill "jacks" when they catch them...but I am under the belief that they keep the pond in check.

We caught several others throughout the day...but none were even close to this size.

As aggressive as picks are, I've found them to be leader shy. It's odd, but on a number of occasions I've gone out to fish for picks and I've used a tie-able wire leader about 4 inches in length, and I've gotten follows, but few takes. Tie the same fly directly to the leader, and those follows become slashing takes. Subsequently, I've gone to a heavier mono now and don't even bother with the wire. I'll take my chances at losing a few flies rather than miss the fun because I was too cheap...

Bunk40...we were not targeting pickerel...and we were not using wire leaders. This time of the spring we tend to hook up with a lot of pickerel...but we are intending to find largemouth bass instead. In the cases that we do hook up with a pickerel, they tend to cut the mono right off the hook set or soon after. My friend was very lucky to actually get this "beast" to the jon boat.

I would also be interested to see what other members are putting together as far as wire...
