No pictures and no catch to report, but while out on Grove today I enticed a feisty pickerel on the deer hair frog I was casting. No lie, this fish shot out of the water, grabbing my fly, slicing the leader as soon as the line went tight, but landed a good three feet away from it's point of exit, all in one smooth arc. It was really an amazing thing to see.

Not a bad fish, either. Probably in the 18 inch range.

Thanks Jeff,

Tight to shore in weedy areas sounds like a pattern worth investigating. I guess they are in there picking off frogs and baitfish along with small bluegills etc.

This is how I'll be stalking the bass pickerel and panfish.
I am no expert even though I have caught many over the years. Most spin fishing though. Anyways it seems to me most I have caught were near shallow water near the pond edges. They lay in the weeds and wait for something they can ambush. I have recently caught them on the fly using a goldie fly mentioned in the tackle and techniques forum and a standard bead headed clouser brown or rust in color. The latest heat wave has finally evaporated some water out of the area ponds which are now...

Hi guys,

I'm coming down from Ontario to Rhode Island to float tube and flyfish for large and smallmouth bass, jumbo perch, bull bluegills and Eastern Chain Pickerel. We don't have pickerel in Ontario in spite of the fact that you'll hear most guys talking about the "pickerel" (Walleye) as their favourite fish. Do you fellows have any advice for targeting a nice "pick".

I got a couple down there last year but they were very small. One of the pickerel I...
