I'm sure we've all caught them many times, but how many of you have actually targeted catfish on a fly? I posted an article from a fishing partner at www.flyfishohio.com/tailwater_catfish.htm regarding some of his findings.

I've targeted channel cats. A Mickey Finn has always been my best fly for these tough fellows. Something about yellow and red that just aggravates catfish I guess. My 2006 goal is to try for a flathead on a fly.

So what about it? Any of you folks ever deliberately...
Absolutely not. Catfish are not some sluggish bottom feeder sucking up rotted flesh from the muck. Bullheads fill that description, but flatheads (shovelhead catfish), channel cats, blues and whites are aggressive sight predators. From an evolutionary point of view, they are well...

I finally hooked a channel catfish using a bunny leech but i was trying to catch the carp that frequent the area. iused no strike indicator. i allowed the fly to sink about 10' and watched my line as it started to move away from the boat. i set the hook & reeled him in. I will use a mickey finn the next time i'm there.

Nice cat! I had a fish about that size break my 8wt in a sudden rush once. Came in like a kitten and right at my feet made the strongest run I've ever experience. Top 18" of the rod exploded and the fish ran out 50 yards of line in one sustained run. Catfish are definitely a strong contender. I can't imagine 8lbs on a 3 wt. Your lucky to have landed it!

I love catfish on the fly!

My first purchase of the magazine “Warmwater Flyfishing” was because of the cover story “Catfish on the Fly”. I thought “yeah, right”, purchased the mag, read the article, tied up one of the flies, went to an “urban pond” that was stocked with channel cats and caught an 15” channel cat on my second cast. I subscribed to the mag the next day.

The flies I have used are an olive bead head wolly bugger and an orange bass feather “worm fly”...

There are a couple of rivers in n Indiana that give up channel cats up to 20" on black wooly buggers - altho I've never actually fished for them. They just turned up; in the one instance during late fall while fishing for brown trout, and in the other while fishing for smallmouth bass. They are certainly strong fish - much more fun than the walleyes that also turned up from time to time while smallie fishing. In my experience they feed around the riffles just like other gamefish....

in my home waters(Prospect park lake, NY) there are channel cat fish but they are not targeted due to the large bass population. i want to catch a cat fish on a fly & i hope to get one this coming season. i think catfish will be the next craze as more fly fishers target them; just as carp are receiving more attention now.
