Very interested in getting THE ultimate panfish rod. Will fish mostly from boat with foam spiders, beadhead nymphs, small poppers. Am all set for bass rods. Lots of chat about Steffen blanks & rods. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Tom |

The ultimate for me has been an 8' 2wt graphite. I caught hundreds [up to 10 1/2" BG and RE] last season on that rod. In fact the only time I didn't use it last year was when the wind just made it too difficult. Landed crappie up to 11" and LMG up to about 2 #'s [~ 1# smallie] as well. Had a coupla fish on that just kicked my @$$ as well - have no idea what they were. Mine weighs 2 oz and the reed weighs 3 oz - it's like fishing with a balsa wood yardstick! don |

I like the 1 piece 6.5' 2/3 weight w/a 3 TT. I think you prefer longer rods though... don't you? Alec

The DorbeR group in Arkansas lists a 10 foot one weight in its "blanks for sale" I called them, as I thought it must be a mistake, and they told me it was real; some of the trout fishermen use them for high stick nymphing; but I am curious about the blanks use as a panfish rod...-p-

DorbeR group is/has built blanks for several of the "name" brands. They are a small business right here in Arkansas that is easy to work with on a personal bases. Several folks in our fly fishing club have built on their blanks and swear by them. Their finished rods are well put together with quality components .
The owner was the program at a meeting last summer and brought along several tryout rods. Sweet, smooth, casters made in the U.S.A. at a reasonable price. Just returned from a kid's trout day we put on this morning in a park pond. The temperature was 17 and we thought maybe 17 kids would show. Over 150 registered and a bunch more just walked in. It was heartening to see the single moms and grandpas bringing on the younger generation. Many limits were caught and we introduced anyone interested to the long rod. This might work elsewhere. We got Game and Fish to donate a load of trout which are a local novelty here ...several nice brooders. And we gave shakespear ultralight rod and reel sets to the first 50 kids. Local businesses donated door prizes. We helped people get started fishing, and demonstrated the sport. This is typical put and take winter fishing in a what is a warmwater fishery but we hope some will provide sport til spring. Dan |

They've(DorbeR group) got some new technology, making a rod they claim is just like bamboo only lighter; its a new process where the fibers of the graphite blank are kinda woven. For a description, go to their website; kinda pricy, but a whole lot cheaper than bamboo; their description sounds just like what we are looking for in a brim/panfish rod-p-

Did a little shopping around & have found the Scott Rod company is coming out with a new G2 Series to replace the G Series. The G rods are some of the smoothest casting rods I have ever cast. Their 2 wt is the truest 2 wt I've ever cast & it did not feel like a toy - like my Orvis. Although not fiberglass, I just could not pass it up the chance to get one of these rods. You're right Alec I do like longer rods so I got the 8' - 3 wt, with the cork reel seat with sliding band - also my favorite. I'm a happy guy!
Keep your eye on Ebay, because the shops are selling new G Series rods at very good prices. Thanks for the help. Tom |

Isn't the G Series, the fiberglass rods? Are the new ones fiberglass or did they go to graphite? A friend of mine has the little fiberglass 2 weight from Scott and it is a honey-p-

The G and new G2 Series are Graphite, the F Series is Fiberglass. The G Series is their light presentation - medium action rods. Give one a try. Scott is not so much into the Nano-hightechno Rods, but concentrate on tapers, and consistancy between rods.
