I live in Ashland so I thought I would try the Charles River in the South Natick area. Any thoughts regarding fly rod weights etc? I am currently reading Carp on the Fly but would appreciate input from those that may have done the deed locally. FYI, I had the opportunity to visit the fly shop in the Chicago Bass Pro Shop. The pro there informed me that they refer to carp as Chicago Brown Trout. Glicky

Posts: 403 05/13/07 20:25:14 Master Guide	I've taken carp with 3/4 wt rod but that was after having taken a number of them with heavier rods. my first carp was taken on a 6 wt. i have never caught a truly big carp(15+ lbs). at a minimum i use 0X tippet, you can use lighter tippet but then you can't muscle the fish. Have aplan for how you plan to fight the fish. try to keep the fish from running into weeds or other line breaking obstructions in the water. confuse the fish by making it swim in different directions after the hook is set. pump the rod & retrieve line. I don't think the rod weight is as important as not panicking once you feel the power of the carp. the carp should be reacting to your tactics not you reacting to the carp. Bill

Posts: 23 05/15/07 09:43:20 Registered Member	I agree with Bill, rod/line weight not that big of deal. I carp fished for years with a 5wt, and got many carp of 20lbs. Tippet strength is where its at!!! I now use a 6wt glass rod for most of my carping. One big disadvantage to using bigger rods/lines, carp are very shy, I want the smallest, lightest splash, and the least visable line flying around over the carp.

Posts: 268 05/15/07 14:33:07 Guide	the bull creek crayfish that I posted on the panfish forum is a very good carp fly. One day I watched them circling under a cottonwood tree. I went home and tied up some cottonwood seed flies - tuffs of white marabou tied with brown thread on a size 16 scud hook. Went back the next day and caught 4 carp under the same tree up to to 8 lbs. - that was on a 4-wt. - it was quite a tussle. also heard of people tying mulberry imitations they're not normally piscivorous predators, but I've taken many carp on slowly dragged minnow imitations at advantageous times when there are injured or carcasses in the water: in the summer heat when limestone pools can hit 90 degrees, the carp can still breathe because of their gill labrinith; when the white bass run and generally kill small minnows; when the water drops after flood runoff, and injured minnows are collecting in the eddies. and many on nymphs, matching the hatch
