Help, I am an ADDICT. When ever I see pictures of monster bluegills, crappies in the 1-3 pound range I start to salivate, start tying flies like crazy and obsessively fish the local ponds and lakes in quest of the monster pan fish to get my fix. Even though these pictures of fish are caught on traditional fishing gear, I can't imagine what it must be like to catch fish like these on a 2-4 wt fly rod...Is there a cure for this obsession or am I ruined for life? Help....

Amen brother, I am right there with you. There is nothing I would rather catrch than big panfish - They are the best target of all with light fly tackle.

I was just a little shaky but doing OK until I scrolled down to Alec's pic of that BIG dark Ole humphead! That's preemo fish porn right htere! MAN, I can barely type. I'm off to go chase the wife around to take my mind off that fish!

Wee - I propose that the Tisdale Society visit the spot that I caught that big BG and many others like it, this spring. This pond has the best BG fishing I
have ever experienced. I wouldn't dream of naming it here... but the STS should definitely make a trip there. I will propose it at the STS forum... Alec

May I suggest you follow the twelve step program in Panfish Privatorious or PP:
Step 1. Accept the fact you are powerless over your need to catch fish so easily cooked in a pan. Step 2. Seek a higher power to help you end your helplessness over your addiction Step 3. Stay away from tag sales, the internet, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's, Tackle Shops, and Ebay Step 4. Do not read books or magazines on fishing Step 5. Stay away from people with float tubes Step 6. Do not speak of fiberglass, graphite, boron, or bamboo Step 7. Fish Trout Ponds with worms and a big bobber - a large white pail is a great touch Step 8. Read Ernest Schwiebert each night before you go to bed Step 9. Do not watch fishing shows on weekends unless it's Bill Dance Step 10. Gather all people you have affected due to your absence while fishing, have a fish fry and apologize for nothing Step 11. Get on your knees and find your tackle. Step 12. Invite your higher power Pan Fishing - there is absolutely nothing wrong with you - for you are the enlightened. Friar Tom PS Any reference to other 12 step programs is not meant to criticize their incredible success.

Great steps for a resolution for this awful addiction...Man, I fell off the wagon hard this week ....I was following your 12 steps addiction program as instructed and doing real well, until I visited the newly opened Bass Pro Shop in Foxboro, MA. Dang, if I didn't go look at the huge fresh water aquarium full of live fish swimming around, Huge Crappie, Bass, Big Gills and Yellow perch... I am going out this weekend and fish somewhere, I don't care if it is snowing... Add another Step to the program #13, don't go to Bass Pro Shop...

Ask & it shall be done. This affliction is so severe that treatment modalities must constantly be evaluated and revised.

June.

That's it guys..the curly fries and Dr. Pepper just won't cure this dang affliction...after seeing these great trophy pictures, I can't imagine the fight these fish put upon a fly rod....I wake up in sweat at night, ready to load up the truck and find the nearest pond. I am trolling for fish this weekend, dont care what species hit my flies...Gosh.... it is going to be a long winter.... A serious panfish addict |

for me, it's strains of Long-ear sunfish. Every river and creek has a strain with different markings
 Guadalupe River
While the state has been stocking endemic Guadalupe bass westward to save the species from their widespread stocking of smallmouth in the 70s, west of the
Medina River, and other than catfish, long ears are the only native predators.

Bulldog those fish remind me of the red breasted sunfish I was catching in the Three Mile river last fall on my lunch breaks. Unfortunately I don't work
near there anymore but they were a lot of fun and very colorful.

I will have to try to hunt down some panfish in streams here near me and take the camera with me! Thank you for making it even harder for me to focus on work
while at work (10 minutes from stream fishing).
