I was in the area of a well known Cape Cod native brook trout stream that empties into salt water with my daughter yesterday morning and had my equipment so
I decided to stop and check out the water. Lack of rain has the water moving slowly and the tide was up which influences the end of the stream flow too. I
spoke to a nice local who visits almost daily and he reported good fishing all season and being catch and realease the numbers are strong. The local TU
recently did a survey with very positive findings. There are herring that spawn up stream in the headwaters so the Native Brookies are accustomed to eating
them. So after a few drifts with a olive wooley bugger which I got a hit from a small one I switched to a small black ghost streamer. I had moved to a very
difficult spot in between and donated a streamer to the trees first though
. Decided roll casting was out of the question so I just dropped my line in the current and
let the current pull line down stream. I only needed the length of the nine foot leader and got my fly into a nice little sunlit riffle when BANG! I was on.
Using a 7ft Orvis FullFlex glass so the fish put up a nice fight. I was more concerned though with landing it quickly so I could show my young daughter how
beautiful these fish are. Especially the fall spawn colors. She remarked that the lower fins looked like Nemo from the disney movie. A good observation I
thought. Unfortunately I did not get a photograph which gives me motivation to go back....
