The 2008 skunk was eliminated on my first try of the year. Bought my license at 8:30 this morning and by 10:30 I'd hoisted the first fish of the year
over my canoe's gunwale! Fooled a good 'gill on one of DP Popper's foam spiders (a GREAT bluegill gitter).
Had the incredible pleasure of hosting Alec at my place last night as he was in the area doing a demo on classic bass fly tying, and we took full advantage of
the GLORIOUS weather we've had the last two weeks to launch out onto Grove Pond, and we absolutely killed the panfish. I managed to bring in one LMB of
about 1+ lbs, but I'm not lying when I say that we had pretty fast and consistent action on some very healthy bluegill and calicoes.
Alec was pulling them in left and right on a bright blue classic bass fly pattern, and after admitting that the bassing would be very slow (topwater was not
where they were looking, in spite of a couple early takes), I experimented with a few flies before stumbling on a bright pink shrimp bonefish fly. Tied it on
and it was not long before the old Fenwick was doubled over. Then after I cleaned about 5lbs of gunk off the hook, I started catching fish.
It was a truly wonderful inauguration to the 2008 fishing season. We've been blessed by about 10 straight days of sun and temps in the upper 60s/low 70s,
and the shallows (which were ice covered just two weeks ago) are now coming alive.
Alec should have a couple photos up later.
FISH ON!
Mike
