Ever make a balsa wood popper or bug |

My friend, the late Don Carter (not the bowler, died 1992) loved to make balsa wood poppers for fresh and salt water. I am a person who loves to tie and make
bugs. Here is my latest. Hopefully take a big one on the bug this week. I also made another bug - still underconstruction. Not sure what to make - it's a
toss up. John Alden Knight Mystery Bug or John Alden Knight Bulldozer.

Yes sir, I couldn't make it three so I made a double weedguard. The bug I made yesterday has one fifty pound weedguard, will post bug later.

Wow, that's a jaw full of bug you tied there AJ! Keep us posted on what it produces. ( P.s. You throwing that on a 9 wt?) FWIW, I've been making my
favorite bass popper ( Lefties bugs) out of balsa for at least 10 years. I've tried cork an dother materials but Balsa seems to behave better in the water,
is CHEAP to buy and is easy to work. Of course, most of my lefties bugs are in the size 6 range.

I went fishing the other day and caught one little 12" dink bass. Downer. I was hanging around the dock and talked to two groups of bait casters when they
came off the water, asked them how they did, and all four men slayed the blacks on tiny torpedos. They all caught a lot of bass. So, I got to thinking: How can
I create a balsa tiny torpdo-like fly i can cast? Well, I'm working on it; have nothing to report, but thought I might "fling the craving" on
some of you bass fishermen. I'll send some pics once i've made a prototype that ill actually catch a fish and is light enough to cast on a bass rod. If
anyone has a similar fly, how bout posting a pic. Our texas bass sometimes go thru a selection phase when they will hit topwater tail-spins and turn down
chugger-type flies and lures. Schooling blacks also love torpedos. I bass fish with mainly 5,6, and 7 weight rods, so this will be a challenge-p-

Alec ties up some nice fly rod spinner baits, so I would imagine a Tiny Torpedo-type fly is well within the realm of possibility. I'm not a tyer, so I may
be all wet when it comes to this suggestion, but I've got a Puglisi articulated popper and I'm thinking that something similar -- a foam body with the
hook swinging free and a prop up front (maybe with a thinner profile than the TT) might work.
Didn't Arbogast used to make fly rod versions of some of their classic plugs like the Hula Popper and others? Mike |

yep; i've got a few of the old hula poppers but theyre too big and heavy for practical use; good idea about the free swinging hook; wished i knew where i
could get some small double hooks, like they put on H&H spinners; that would work great with the hooks hanging freely in the rear, hook point up, behind
the spinner blade. I think the secret to the TT is the "darting" effect when stripped along with the prop turning. Another old bait was the dalton
special. Remember that one???; I caught 2 tow sacks full of bass on a green spotted frog pattern dalton special!!

Here is your assignment. Go to your local library or used, rare book stores. Look for Fresh Water Bass by Ray Bergman, first printing 1942, fifth printing
1946. Here is a book on bass fishing with casting and fly tackle. It has illustrated fly/bug plates. Also at the rear of the book there are descriptions of the
lures and bugs, with dimensions etc. Here is your opportunity to get your whittling knife, a piece of balsa, or deer body hair with some hackle. HAVE F_U_N,
Amen God thank you for Ray Bergman. Enjoy
