First off, let me say thanks to all of you who responded to my request for information about 2 wt. rods. While I would love to find a nice fiberglass rod someday, my interest at the moment is in a couple of very reasonably priced graphite rods. So, once again, I am seeking your opinions.

I have found two very nice rods and would be interested in your thoughts on these in terms of how well they would perform in a warm water setting, principally on panfish.

I have narrowed my search to an Orvis Ultra-fine, 7'9" 2 wt. rod and a St. Croix Avid (pre-IPC) 7'6" 2 wt rod. The Orvis is lightly used and the St. Croix is new with a warranty. The Orvis rod is $75 more expensive than the St. Croix.

Please express your thoughts on these rods.

take the st croix. it is less money. it is new. it has a warranty.

I would go with the st. croix unless you have a thing for orvis. :lol

I am with Bill.(take the st croix. it is less money. it is new. it has a warranty.)

I have a TFO series 1 3 wt and like it very much. I got it used for $45. I have cauth alot of perch, crappie and even some bass.

The Orvis is a slower rod - more of a full-flex than the St. Croix. I do believe that Orvis will honor their warranty, even if the rod is used. I may be wrong - worth looking into. It's a tough call, but given my preference for slower rods, I'd go with the Orvis. Cheers, Alec

As Alec said, there is likely a significant difference in their action. The Ultra fine is generally considered a SLOW rod where the Avid, is more moderate. This is going to be a matter of prefference and intended use. Best to try practice casting each ( if possable) with the intended fly size and line weight. ( i.e. If your going to be throwing #8 foam spiders or BH Wooly Buggers on a WF 3F with it, make sure it's up to it. )

I have the orvis in a 3 weight; tried the 2 weight, but for my fishing I found it to be too willowy; but its matter of preference.-p-

I've got two St. Croix rods and I like both. I also own some Orvis.

My only complained with the 6wt St. Croix was from a persistent problem with the tip guide coming unglued. It was also a bit heavier than my comparable rods, due to a thicker butt end than my 6wt Orvis, but it had a nice stiff action that I used to favor, especially for tossing big bugs in thick salad and working the flies/fish therein.

My 3/4 wt St. Croix is a good, responsive rod with surprising muscle for its size. It's a pretty stick, too, and handles the bulk of my panfishing (though, as I've already mentioned, I'm getting a 2/3 wt glass rod this winter, so less action for the St. Croix). I don't own an Orvis lighter than a 5wt.

If you want a stiffer/fast action rod, go with the St. Croix. If you want something a little more delicate and supple, go with the Orivs. If you have no preference, save the $$ and go with the St. Croix. And if you can, cast both before buying.

I own 2 St.Croix --- both are Avids ---a 2 wgt(7'6") , and a 3wgt.(6')
and a ,7',5 piece,Remington wayfarer and finally a 1wgt Orvis which I use with a 2wgt line all the time.I prefer the 2wgt Avid over all these rods and the Orvis 1 wgt with a 2weight line is my second choice.
