Took a class last spring from Professor B52 on spinning and tying some classic deer hair bass bugs...I have struggled tying deer hair bugs and tried numerous times; resulted in some god-ugly looking bass bugs that would definitely scare some fish... well, I think I finally getting
the hang of it...

Spinning some deer hair, this is a lot harder than it looks...

Looks like a psychedelic mouse that stuck its tail in a light socket

Starting the rough trimming, what a mess my wife said

Little more trimming will make this fishable

Ready for the lilly pads ....

Added some rubber legs... to give it some added action...now to give it a name?

Professor B52... what would my grade be for my first quiz??? I know I probably need to pack the hair tighter, the real test to see if it will catch a bass... got some plans for night time buggin soon to try it out

FWIW, Even after lessons, I couldn't tie a deciently packed/perportioned hairbug untill I got hold of a "Jimmy Nix Bass Flys" video. I have to say that video was amazing in the tips and tricks it gives you. (on spinning, packing, stacking, pairing legs.....). Really turned me around within a few weeks. If anybody thinks they need help (and can't sit down with AJ,) you should GET THIS VIDEO). No affiliation, yada, yada.

p;s BTW, NICE hair work looks very evenly and densly packed. That seems to be the #1 problem people have when startign out with bugs. You learned well!

Hey Gillbuster,
Fine looking bass bug. Your assignment add water. Anyone tying deer hair bass bugs - don't be discouraged. I almost quit tying when I was young I found the hair to be rhick on top. I would take a razor and cut the whole bug and start all over again. Then I realized it's ok to rotate the hair by hand to fill areas lack in hair.

My fishing partner of twenty late Don Carter (died in 1992), and I would fish Sawdy Pond in Westport Mass. The lake had largemouths and smallmouths. Our ritual in July and August. Was to get to the pond around 4 - 4:15 am while it was dark. Using hair bugs - as soon as the bug would land a fish would be on the bug. Our best day was 75 bass apiece, our worst day was six fish. It was amazing as if they watched the bug in flight. If they didn't strike all you had to do was twitch the bug.

Gill buster, they would look at your bug and they would be called the bugbuster, ha. Again nice bug. AJ

Hey AJ, You know I live 1/2 mi from that pond, right? I have a 17' canoe with a motor any time you want to meet up and fish it!
