Here's another fact : bluegills are near sighted. Don't believe it? Cast a fly 3 feet away from a bluegill and see if it will examine it. I fish clear
ponds, and the bluegills refuse to swim very far to get food! Bass on the other hand...they'll swim 10 feet to check something that splashes in the water!

bluegillbob wrote: Hmmm... I've had 'gills swim a good distance to check out a fly. They're responding primarily to vibration at distance, so I don't think I'd put much credit to vision when a bass or bluegill swims a few feet to check out or take a fly. But I do know I love the thrill of seeing the water move when a bass or good sized bluegill is heading toward what I've tossed. Mike |

Spin,
I've yet to see a bluegill swim as far as a bass to check out something. Maybe my bluegills need glasses! Cheers, Robert |

I love to flyfish for Bluegill & Shellcracker. I get my best results, usually, with a yellow #8 Wooly Worm with an unweighted black gnat or #12 hare's
ear dropper tied to the curve of the hook with about 18 - 24 in. of tippet early in the season when the water gets into the 60's F. Later when they get off
the beds I like a #6 or 8 popper with the same dropper or a #10 or 12 wooly wormas the dropper. For some Really explosive top water hits tie up a few Web Worm
imitations, an unweighted Wooly Worm tied on a Mustad #9672 or similarlong hook and match the WebWorms (oak moth caterpillars?) #8 or 10. Use grizzly hackle a
size or two larger than the hook ang grease ONLY the hackle tips to float this jewel under bushes and Hang On! Last July I caught a 4lb. 11oz. Large mouth!!!
on my 4wt. this way and nearly fell out of my canoe! Fact: This is my best Bluegill tip.
