As part of my transition from chasing the "latest greatest" in fly gear to fishing fiberglass fly rods has also been picking up a few single action and click and pawl reels. Over the past two years I've narrowed my collecting to J. W. Young reels for trout and Martin reels for warmwater. So far the Martin 67 series...67A, 67N, and all the rest of the reels built off that same frame style for other companies have become my favorite warmwater fly reels.

Here is a couple photographs of my favorites...and would like to see what are yours!

Master Guide

I don't have a pic, but I have a Bass Pro Shops large arbor : CV2 (in 4wt). It's one of their "top of the line" flyreels.

Alec...I was hoping that the Valentine would make the thread. What a cool reel. If I ever get off this Martin/Young bent...one of those Valentine's would be neat to find.

Master Guide

I dunno... for warmwater fly fishing, it's tough to beat a Pflueger Medalist. The price is right, and they get the job done. I still own my first fly reel -- a Pflueger -- and it still sees service.

I do have two Tioga's, however, that I splurged on. One's on my Fenwick 6 and other on my custom 2-3.

Hardy St. George 3-3/8", probably 1920's, with Paul H. Young "Ace" rod. It's nice to take a moment to remember this fish when all the ponds here are frozen.

Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over 290 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

That bass looks to be 5 1/2 or 6 lbs...either way, that's a nice fish!

For warmwater, I use Pflueger Medalists exclusively. 1495 for bass and 1494 for panfish.

I use a Orvis Battenkill 3/4 click&pawl. Since I really only fish for panfish, thats all I need.

I love my Bronson Royalist. It's light, matches my Fenwick FF755 perfectly, is vintage-cool, is simple (nothing hardly to break) and was very inexpensive (<$5.00 on ebay).

But.....I was in a local Cabela's today...looking for rod building stuff...when I strolled through their fly fishing department. They had last years "Traditional" model on sale (Reg $69.88 for $39.88). I picked up a 6'6 2wt to play with on the tight shallow creeks on FT Hood. Anyone have any suggestions for a light, simple (click pawl) standard arbor reel that might balance this ultra light graphite stick? Thanks, David
