Catfish on a fly |
Lead | ||
|
I caught my first catfish of the year while exploring another lake in NYC. This fish was taken on a #14 BH hare's ear. inspite of his size he fought
HARD! He did everything but jump. There are two more lakes on Staten Island that I want to fish, Wolf's pond and Brady's pond.

Though I can't be certain, it looks like a black bullhead. The tail is square, so its not a channel cat. All species of catfish will take a fly -
channels get very aggressive pre-spawn in June. I find the traditional yellow and red of a Mickey Finn to be my most productive pattern. But, as you've
found out, they're happy to eat insects and they'll fight very hard.
In about two weeks we'll have the 17 year periodic cicadas hatching in Ohio. I'm hoping for a catfish on a dry fly! Joe C. "Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the
drink, taste the fruit,

Joe, the 17yr cicada just misses me this year, and I wish we had them here...I would love to hook into a cat on a dry!

CATFISH on the fly.. | #3 | ||
|
FIRST POST...Cats are the tuffest fish I have gotten on the fly..I would say they are the strongest ounce for ounce..I had one that I sware was a fish bigger
than a 15 pound carp that I had caught in the same season..then I landed it and it was a 4 pound cat...amazing strength..
Here is a video I took of it....there are a few...the fish on the drag is the same cat... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXYlWnfBXFA here it is on the reel.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oH5UelJStc Oh yeah...I got these during the "mullberry hatch" with flys I tie to look like mullberrys..there are tons of carp and I have gotten a bunch of cats the same way.... I kayak flyfish warmwater in NJ.... |

Bill, the location is not too critical. Just find some mullberry trees and wait for them to ripe, once that happens any time they fall is good...especially in
rain events..........I cannot disclose the location due to the amount of peeps that read these posts ( not the people on this site, but the public in
general).....I have been reading post on fish forums for a while and I know from experience that a reply to one person is actually a reply to the WORLD. I am
sure there are Mullberry Trees around where you fish...look for green fruit now..it will turn purple or white in about 3 to 4 weeks...C-YA..good luck and let
me know if you find any....PEACE!
