Carrie Stevens (1882-1970) of Upper Dam, Maine, created some of the most beautiful and enduring streamer patterns ever, including the legendary Gray Ghost,
which she designed to catch the giant brook trout and landlocked salmon of the Rangeley Lakes. "No tier of that period was as creative in designing
patterns or tied better quality, more lifelike streamers than Mrs. Stevens. How many could tie a fly without a vise, even a simple woolly bugger or deer hair

Amazing woman & fly tier! I started tying 42 years ago, and also started without a vise or bobbin or instruction. I held the hook in my right hand fingers,
and tied with my left. There was some tying articles in magazines at the time, but not many. I tied for a few years like that, but no where near the number of
flies she tied, and mine were very crude! I could probably still tie a single fly without a vise, but doubt I could do it without a bobbin. I also couldn't
tie many like that now due to arthritis in my hands. It's truly remarkable how she tied all those years without a vise or bobbin!
I still tie left handed as a result of my beginnings, but I'm right handed otherwise. |
