Here in MD, we have some great Pickerel fishing in several of the tidal rivers. At one time, they were a very popular fish, but the fisheries diminished, and they became hard to find. Actually the Yellow Perch declined, and some rivers were closed to fishing for them, and still are. I guess since a lot of Pics were caught by guys looking for Perch, and since the rivers have been closed, not as many folks fish specifically for Pickeral any longer.

The good news is they've made a come back big time, and many of the local fly guys have started chasing them. I see more & more reports being posted on some websites that cover this area.

I used to catch several of them in the spring when I was a kid, while fishing for other species. My late fishing buddy & I also used to take a few trips in the winter around the state to some of the state owned ponds, just to see if we could find some Pickerel to toss flies at! We always had the whole pond to ourselves, and usually found a few fish! Always enjoyed them, especially on flies!

Some of the bass guys, those who are not fly flingers, complain about catching them, worried too much about losing their high dollar lures! I just tell them to take up chasing them with flies & it will adjust their attitude towards them!
