No Picks to Report? |

Here it is mid May and very few pickerel reports coming in. What is up with that? With the chilly conditions here in the Northeast, I expected to hear/see more stuff about these guys. Don't be ashamed, guys! There's nothing wrong with catching pickerel.

Hell I am not ashamed. I got my first fly rod Chain Pickerel on Saturday! What fun that was. Caught my first Yellow Perch on fly rod too! Had a blast! They were pounding a #8 Tan bead head Wooly Bugger. Only the second time I have gone fishing from a Kayak and now I am hopelessly addicted!! I love kayaking and kayak fishing. Here are the pics of my first Chain Pickerel....... Now if I could just catch my first Bass on fly rod...........

I would have liked to report a few pickerel catches but unfortunately the few i've had on this year have all released themselves. I probably wouldn't have put them on here... although there is nothing embarassing about catching pickerel, it is a little embarassing if the only one I caught would fit neatly in a hot dog bun.

Caught a couple of those fly-robbing pests the other day. The only redemption was that were a good size. |

I'll gladly let some pickerals demolish some of my flies. It takes about a dozen bass to hurt a fly!

Bringing this topic up to date, I'll add a little more from my Burrage report.
As you might imagine, the cool, damp, dreary conditions were of little concern to the pickerel at Burrage yesterday. I fished primarily on top, slow-popping a big cork bug along the weedlines and stumps for bass, but every once in a while I'd speed up the chugging and managed to entice a bunch of picks into taking. In one particularly weedy/stumpy area, I noticed a tell-tale slashing swirl behind the popper, so I gave another couple of quick pops and that was too much for Mr. Pickerelly to take. He pounced on the fly and I was fast into one of the biggest jacks I've seen in a while. He took me for a little ride, but I was using a heavy leader, so the weeds and teeth didn't worry me much and eventually I hefted him into the tube. He was not only long, but a broad fish as well. The 18" measurement on the tube wasn't nearly enough to tell the tale, so I marked him off and measured the overage to 6 more inches: 24! Great fish. Later in the morning I tussled with a smaller pick, but he got himself deep hooked and, against better judgment, I lip-locked him to get the fly out. Unlike bass, lip-locking does not "paralyze" a pick, and he thrashed a bit, just enough to rip some gashes in my thumb. Nasty. On my pass of the day I latched onto a 21 incher that fought like the Dickens: across to my left, then to my right, turning my tube and then bolting straight under me and into my feet. Great fun! Wish I'd had my camera, but since the forecast was for rain, I left it at home. Mike |
