I love catfish on the fly!

My first purchase of the magazine “Warmwater Flyfishing” was because of the cover story “Catfish on the Fly”. I thought “yeah, right”, purchased the mag, read the article, tied up one of the flies, went to an “urban pond” that was stocked with channel cats and caught an 15” channel cat on my second cast. I subscribed to the mag the next day.

The flies I have used are an olive bead head wolly bugger and an orange bass feather “worm fly” (caught a 21” channel on that one!). I need to try a Mickey Finn. I think having red in any catfish pattern is important (I like to use red crystal flash).

RE Flatheads: I was once told by Jim Swann, Dade City fly shop owner and avid warmwater fly fisher, that channel cats can “see” better and that other cats are more “smellers and feelers”, making channel cats better targets for the fly fisherman. My current home water doesn’t have many channel cats, so I think I am going to try some “stinky flies”.

I am with you, brother. Catfish are my next “target” too.
